Glossary of Shamanic Terms

Shamanic Journey

A meditative state induced by rhythmic drumming or rattling where the practitioner travels to non-ordinary reality to seek guidance, healing, or information from spirit helpers.

Power Animal

A spirit guide in animal form that provides protection, power, and wisdom. Each person typically has one or more power animals that accompany them through life and shamanic work.

Soul Retrieval

A shamanic healing practice where lost soul parts are recovered and returned to restore vitality and wholeness. Soul loss can occur from trauma, abuse, accidents, or difficult life experiences.

Extraction

The shamanic practice of removing spiritual intrusions or negative energies from a person's energy field that may be causing illness, pain, or emotional disturbance.

Lower World

One of the three realms in shamanic cosmology, typically accessed by journeying downward. Home to power animals and nature spirits. Associated with instinct, primal wisdom, and Earth energy.

Upper World

The celestial realm accessed by journeying upward. Home to spirit teachers, angels, and ascended guides. Associated with wisdom, divine knowledge, and spiritual guidance.

Middle World

The spiritual dimension of our physical reality. Where shamans can journey to find lost objects, communicate with the spirits of places, or work with the souls of the deceased.

Psychopomp

The shamanic practice of guiding souls of the deceased to the afterlife. From Greek words meaning "guide of souls." Helps spirits who are confused or stuck transition peacefully.

Divination

The practice of seeking knowledge about the future or unknown through shamanic journeying, signs, omens, or other spiritual means. Used to gain clarity and guidance for decision-making.

Medicine Bundle

A collection of sacred objects with spiritual power, typically wrapped in cloth or leather. May contain stones, feathers, bones, herbs, and other items gathered during shamanic work.
