What to Expect in Your First Shamanic Session

A guide to preparing for and experiencing your first journey into shamanic healing

If you're reading this, you've felt the call. Something within you—perhaps a whisper from your soul, a persistent intuition, or a deep longing for healing—has drawn you to explore shamanic work. You may feel excited, curious, or even a little nervous. All of these feelings are natural and welcome.

Let me guide you through what to expect in your first shamanic session, so you can approach this sacred work with clarity, openness, and trust.

Before Your Session: Preparation

Shamanic healing works best when you come with intention and an open heart. Here's how to prepare:

Set Your Intention

Take time before your session to reflect on why you're seeking shamanic healing. What do you hope to address? What are you ready to release? What aspect of yourself are you calling back? Write down your intention, even if it's as simple as "I'm ready to heal" or "I want to reconnect with my authentic power."

Practical preparations:

  • Avoid alcohol and recreational substances for at least 24 hours before your session
  • Eat lightly on the day of your session—avoid heavy meals that might make you sluggish
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to relax and breathe easily
  • Arrive with an open mind—release expectations about what "should" happen
  • Silence your phone and create space in your schedule to not rush afterward

During Your Session: What Happens

Welcome and Sacred Space

We begin by creating sacred space together. This might include smudging with sage or palo santo, calling in the directions, and inviting our helping spirits to be present. This isn't just ritual—it's a tangible shift in energy that creates a safe container for deep healing work.

Consultation

I'll ask you about what brings you to shamanic healing and what you hope to experience. This conversation helps me understand how to best serve your healing journey. There's no judgment here—only compassionate listening and spiritual insight.

The Healing Work

Depending on what you need, your session may include:

  • Soul Retrieval: I journey to the spirit world to recover lost soul parts and restore your wholeness
  • Extraction: Removing spiritual intrusions or energies that don't belong to you
  • Power Animal Retrieval: Connecting you with your spirit animal allies
  • Sound Healing: Using drum, rattle, or voice to shift energy and facilitate healing
  • Energy Clearing: Balancing and harmonizing your energy field

You'll typically lie comfortably on a massage table or sit in a chair while I work. Many people experience deep relaxation, visual imagery, emotional release, or profound insights. Some people fall into a light sleep. Whatever you experience is exactly what you need.

Integration and Closing

After the healing work, I'll share what I experienced in the journey—what the spirits showed me, what was healed, and any messages or guidance for you. We'll discuss what you felt and experienced, and I'll offer suggestions for integration in the days ahead.

We close the sacred space with gratitude to the spirits, directions, and helping forces that supported the healing.

After Your Session: Integration

The healing doesn't end when you leave. In fact, the days following your session are just as important as the session itself.

What You Might Experience

  • Deep relaxation or fatigue as your system integrates the healing
  • Vivid dreams as your unconscious processes the work
  • Emotional releases—tears, laughter, or waves of feeling
  • Increased energy and clarity as old patterns release
  • Synchronicities and signs confirming the healing
  • Shifts in relationships or life circumstances as you embody your healed state

To support your integration:

  • Drink plenty of water to help clear released energies
  • Rest if you feel tired—healing work happens on deep levels
  • Journal about your experience and any insights that arise
  • Spend time in nature to ground the healing
  • Be gentle with yourself and honor whatever emotions surface
  • Avoid alcohol and recreational substances for at least 24 hours

Common Questions

Will I be conscious during the session?

Yes. You remain fully conscious and aware throughout. Some people experience deep relaxation or enter a light meditative state, but you're never "out of control" or unconscious.

Is shamanic healing safe?

Absolutely. Shamanic healing works with compassionate helping spirits and your own soul's wisdom. It's a gentle, non-invasive approach that respects your free will and personal sovereignty.

How long does a session last?

Most sessions run 60-90 minutes, though the healing effects continue long after we complete the formal work together.

Do I need to believe in shamanism for it to work?

You don't need to believe anything specific. What matters is your willingness to receive healing and your openness to the process. The spirits work with sincerity, not belief systems.

How many sessions will I need?

Every healing journey is unique. Some people experience profound shifts in one session. Others benefit from a series of sessions to address layered issues or ongoing spiritual development. We'll discuss what feels right for you.

Trust the Process

Perhaps the most important thing I can tell you about your first shamanic session is this: trust the process.

Your soul knows why you're here. The spirits know what you need. And your body knows how to heal when given the right support and sacred space. You don't need to make anything happen or figure anything out. You only need to show up with sincerity and openness.

Shamanic healing has served humanity for tens of thousands of years because it works. It addresses the spiritual roots of dis-ease, disconnection, and suffering. It restores what's been lost and clears what no longer serves. It reconnects you with your power, purpose, and place in the web of life.

Your healing journey is sacred. I'm honored to walk beside you.
